The Last Blog Post...

Sadly, my time here in Ireland has come to an end. I have loved living the Irish life style for the past three months and getting acquainted with the wonderful town of Maynooth. I have learned so much about myself this past semester than I have learned in the 20 years of my life. The friends, American and Irish, that I have made here will always have a special place in my heart. From traveling to new cities on the weekends to interacting with people who can't speak a lick of English to seeing the beauty of the world. The experiences I have had will always be with me as I have grown and learned from them. Ireland, you have my heart forever and I will be back soon so don't you miss me too much!

Here is just a simple list of the things that Ireland has taught me:

  • I love Guinness.
  • I love anybody with an accent.
  • There is nothing wrong with having a night to yourself... And a tub of ice cream.
  • Sometimes you just gotta dance it out. Especially with your girls right next to you.
  • I have the most supportive family and friends.
  • There is nothing like the Irish Smick Sisterhood.
  • Studying abroad is life changing and everybody should experience living in a foreign country for an extended period of time.
  • Europe is beautiful and no city is the same.
  • I love a good adventure.
  • It is okay to get lost, because not all who wander are lost.
  • "I was finding myself and I didn't know I was lost.
  • Work hard, play hard.
  • The Irish love to drink and know how to party.
  • There is nothing like drinking a Bulmers in an Irish pub listening to live music.
  • It is okay to be homesick at time and want your mom.
  • When someone/thing is bothering you, be honest. Communication is the key to a good relationship no matter who it is with.
  • I am proud to be Chicagoian, A Smick, American, and Catholic.
  • Singing at the top of your lungs with your friends is necessary at least once a week.
  • I have mastered the art of grilled cheese and PB & J.
  • Sleep isn't necessary... Well, it kind of is. But on Mantra Mondays, it's not a priority.
  • I am a hopeless romantic and am always ready for a good Rom Com.
  • Sometimes it's okay to make decisions without thinking, it's the best way to learn. Mistakes are okay to make, learn from them and don't make the same decision twice.
  • There is nothing that beats the green scenery that is Ireland.
  • It's okay to lay in bed and have a good cry. It's actually really healthy.
  • There is no way I can hide being American and I can NOT fake an Irish accent for the life of me.
  • The Irish swear a lot, and I mean A LOT!
  • It is always a good time for Guinness. Hey, it's 5:00 somewhere!
  • Maximus chips are necessary after The Roost on Thursday, no ifs ands or buts.
  • Never have an Irish coffee in a place other than Ireland.

So I leave you with this Irish blessing;

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
the rain fall softly on your fields.
And until we meet again, my friend
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Erin go Bragh, Ireland forever! <3
Slainte for the last time,
Libby

Munich and Amsterdam!

Hello all!

Another video star coming up! But this time I am going to explain a little about each trip. The first part of the video is Munich and the second half is Amsterdam! The song is 500 Miles by The Proclaimers!

I had to put the video up on YouTube so hopefully you can watch it here:

We had a small group in Munich, just me Hannah and MaryClare. Not going to lie, Munich was one of my favorite cities.

  • There was snow when we landed! :) Never been so excited to see snow! But since Munich is a city, there wasn't any on the ground, bummer.
  • Yes, I know you are thinking why in the world we went to KFC... We were really hungry and it was right near our hostel!
  • The best part were the Christmas markets! It really got me in the Christmas spirit!
  • The traditional German clothing is very popular during Oktoberfest! The dress I am holding cost about 100 euros!
  • MaryClare was showing me her family's technique of how they put on their coats in the winter! It brought back a lot of memories for her!
  • On sunday, MaryClare and I went to Dachau which is the largest concentration camp in Germany. I could do a whole separate blog on the camp because it was so interesting. I was so fascinated with the subject and I learned so much. I did not put it in the video because I didn't think it was appropriate.
  • The second Christmas market: Tollwood
  • Bratworsts for dinner! They were so delicious!
  • Hannah really wanted a schnitzel, and that is exactly what she got!
Off to Amsterdam!
  • There was the huge Amsterdam sign right outside of our hostel. It was so fun to climb around and of course to take pictures by!
  • Sorry for the amount of selfie shots, if you know me I love to take a good selfie!
  • The canals and buildings is what makes Amsterdam so unique!
  • More Christmas markets! This market was actually more food than shopping.
  • Anne Frank House: Words cannot describe how rewarding the Anne Frank House was. We were not allowed to take pictures on the inside. We walked through the original secret annex with the bookcase that covered the door. Especially after being in Dachau, I really enjoyed walking through her house.
  • There are small snipits of the Van Gogh Museum. It was right outside our hostel so we decided to check it out a little bit!
  • I went ice skating for the first time! I slowly got to get the hang of it and became a pro at the end! Many thanks to my awesome teacher, Mary Kate!
Not pictured: Friday night we did a pub crawl to see the night life of Amsterdam. We got to taste some original German beer and meet people from London and Austria! The slogan: A night you won't remember but never forget!

I had a blast in all the cities I have been to! Amsterdam was the last city of my European adventure! It makes me sad that I have to leave Ireland in a week but I have no regrets and did everything I can! :) I will blog sometime later this week about all the amazing things here this semester!

Slainte!

Bar "Tha" Lona, España!

The next adventure outside of Ireland was our journey to Barcelona, Spain!

As a group, we have done a great job of getting from the airport to our hostels and this trip was no different. But this train ride was quite an experience because we had our first experience with pick pocketers. In Europe, you have to be careful of your purses because the pick pocketers are terrrible. In Ireland they haven't been that bad and we feel comfortable. When we got on the bus we were awkwardly greeted with a man and his wife/girlfriend to help us on the train. I knew something was sketchy right when we entered the train. I kept my hand on my purse the whole time because I looked over at the dynamic duo staring down at women's purses as they walked through the door of the train. They kept coming closer to us but I was very persistant to drop kick the man if he came any closer. Thank goodness none of us got anything stolen but it was very interesting to watching this man act like a tourist while his girlfriend checked out the merchandise that was coming onto the train. I kept saying in my head, "You are the people my parents warned me about." We were all very cautious and made sure we had everything closed up and safe from harm.

We arrived in Barcelona Friday morning to a bunch of screaming Smick chicks. I kid you not, there were about 20 of us in the same hostel. There were us Irish Smicks, Rome Smicks, and the Spain Smicks. We pretty much took over the hostel, Casa de Gracia. Our hostel was in the perfect location, right in the middle of town. I wouldn't really call it a hostel but more like a mini hotel. The best part, free coffee and tea downstairs in the lobby!

We took a nap right when we arrived because we were exhausted from The Roost the night before... Maybe it wasn't the smartest idea to go right before our 7:30 flight the next morning. But hey, we only have a few more left! After our nap we figured out that our hostel/hotel would have tapas for dinner but first we decided if we wanted to eat out somewhere else. So we walked around town and didn't really find that many restaurants so we had tapas for dinner! The food was absolutely phenomenal  I went to Spain two years ago for World Youth Day and I remember the food being so delicious. So I was very excited to have more Spanish food!

After dinner we all got ready and took over the city of Barcelona. We went to a club called Opium. We had a blast and danced the night away!

Side note: The subway system was super easy and we got the hang of it right away! We got a 10 times usage pass and used it as much as we could! I guess you could say we are all pros at the subways!

The crew waiting for the subway!

So good to see the Rome girls again!

The next morning, we decided that we were going to embrace our inner child and go to the Barcelona Aquarium. It is apparently the biggest in Spain so we decided, hey why not? There were lots of Finding  Nemo quotes said and we actually had a blast!

They had the really cool tunnels with all the sharks swimming by!

Just chillin'...

... on the glass window!

After the aquarium, some of the group went back to the hostel and MaryClare and Claire went to the food market. This market was unbelievable and I wanted to buy everything in sight. They had everything from fresh fruit to a meat market to chocolate stands galore!

The best popsicle in the world, kiwi mango!

There was an assortment of fruit juices. Anything from mint coconut to fresh squeezed orange. I had strawberry banana and it was so fresh tasting and delicious!!

There was even a spices counter with all a bunch of fresh spices!

You could smell the fish right when you walked in.. Yuck! We even saw a woman skinning a fish and taking out its guts and bones...

The picture doesn't do it justice but these strawberries looked like the most perfect piece of fruit I have ever seen!

CHOCOLATE, CHOCOLATE, CHOCOLATE, AND MORE CHOCOLATE!!

Since we had such a successful dinner the night before, we decided to have dinner again back at the hostel. This time it was Chicken and Steak Fajitas. OMG! Even more delicious than the tapas...

Then after dinner we went to the "dancing" fountain. It was one of my favorite parts about Barcelona. This fountain was hugeeee and it danced. Fun fact: this is where the Cheetah Girls did their final performance in their 2nd movie!

We were close that you could feel the mist of the water, and at times it felt like I was going to get splashed with a face full of water!

Thanks for being my stand-in date, Huds! :)
"This music makes me want to go change the world!"

So colorful and fun!!

After the fountain, all of the Smicks decided to go out to a club called Razz Mataz and once again, we killed it and danced the night away!

The next morning, we had to say our goodbyes to all the other girls. Their flights were a lot earlier than ours. Since our flight wasn't until later Sunday night, we had a little bit of time to walk around Barcelona for a little bit longer. We first started at the Park De Guell. The park was built by the architect, Antoni Gaudi, who is the same man who built the Sagrada Familia. This park is most famously known for the mosaic sculptures, especially the famous salamander  Unfortunately  the actual park cost money to go and see so we didn't get to see that much. But there was a perfect view of the Sagrada Familia and the city of Barcelona.

Yes, the Cheetah Girls danced around here too!

This part was where you had to pay so we just walked around the free part for a little bit.

Not far from the park is the famous Sagrada Familia. I have wanted to go to this cathedral ever since I saw an exhibit of it at World Youth Day in Madrid two summers ago. The church is Roman Catholic and was designed by Antoni Gaudi. In November 2011, Pope Benedict consecrated the church as a minor basilica instead of a cathedral. Construction on the church started in 1883 and will not be finished until 2026 (I will be 32 years old.. freaky!) So unfortunately, the church was under construction while we were there but that didn't stop the beauty to shine through.

This is actually the back of the church and the most completed side.

Always gotta get that selfie picture!

You can see the construction on the top as we walked around to the front.

Finally the front! The figures on the outside are the stations of the cross. You can see the crucifixion right at the top and all the stations surrounding it.

It was absolutely beautiful on the inside! The ceilings seemed like the went on FOREVER!

The stained glass was absolutely beautiful!

The main alter

And again.

After we left the church, we headed to the airport. Funny side story, the four of us girls were running on very low sleep and the airport was the funniest part of the trip. We were acting so silly because we were so sleep deprived. I feel bad for the people sitting by us in the terminal and the plane because we were being loud. From the huge burp at dinner to the way Crowe was eating her chocolate, the airport was one of my favorite memories of the trip.

Next up, Munich and Amsterdam!

Adios!

Galway Girl staring Mom and Dad!

So, I did some research and I finally got my video to upload! I've been wanting to put this video up on Facebook but I didn't have legal rights to the song. Here is the video of the week with my parents! Hope you like it!

Let's "Czech" it out!

I have not been keeping up to date with my blog posts recently, and I am so sorry. It's nearing the end of the semester and schoolwork is piling up!

A few weeks ago, MaryKate, Mary Clare, Molly and I went to Prague. Our travel day started off with a delayed flight to Frankfurt, running through the airport to get to our connection, and then a short flight into Prague. We had a little bit of a struggle getting our crowns because they are so cheap according to the US dollar. MaryKate had a friend, Charlie, who is studying in Prague so we stayed at his apartment for the first night and then got a hostel for the rest. Unfortunately, I didn't take that many pictures while I was there. All of us girls have been taking videos with an app called, Video Star. I wish I could upload the one of my parents visiting but for some reason my blog won't let me put a video into it. I bet there is a way so I'm going to monkey around with it to find out. So instead of hearing about my trip to Prague, you can watch it here! I liked it onto Facebook so many of you might have seen it already.

Here ya go:

We have so much to be thankful for!

One of my favorite holidays of the year is Thanksgiving. It is the start of the best time of the year, Christmas time. Every year, Thanksgiving comes at the perfect moment. I begin to miss my friends, family, and school gets to be a little stressful around that time. And there is no other feeling than walking through your front door.
But this year Thanksgiving is going to be quite different. It makes me so sad that I won't be able to spend Thanksgiving with the people I am thankful for the most, my family. So this is going to be a Thanksgiving shout out to the people I am so thankful for in my life.

Mom and Dad: It was wonderful getting to see you guys a few weeks ago. I know that at moments I was getting very frustrated but I had to remind myself that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I have done so much growing up here and I am so glad you got to see my Irish home and why I love this country so much. You guys have done so much for me over the past few years and I don't know who I would be with out your love and guidance. You have taught me everything I know and if it wasn't for you guys, I would be doing as well in Ireland as I am. So thank you for being the best parents I could ask for!

My goon of a brother, Evan: Thank you for being that protective older brother who wants nothing more for his baby sister. Thank you for always making me laugh with your new animals and all the weird stories that come from Whitewater. You are the first person I come to when I need to talk to someone, especially when I need to tell Mom and Dad something. I know that wherever we are in life, we will always have a good time doing some goon squad shenanigans. Thanks for always being my big brother, someone who I can lean on and someone who is always there for me.

The Hogans, The Sochs, The Paparones, and The Burnies (yes, that includes you Rob!): It makes me so sad that I cannot be in  Kohler with all you wonderful people (Paparones, we always miss you at Thanksgiving!). I am so thankful to have all of you guys as a support system. Family is forever and you guys are honestly the best! I miss all your smiling faces and your warm hugs. I cannot wait to dive into that chocolate fountain in December and do our ever so famous karaoke! Don't have too much fun over Thanksgiving and make sure you pick a good name out of the hat for me! :)

Nana and Pops: There are so many days here in Ireland when I look around and say "Nana and Pops would love it here." I am so thankful for you guys especially when it comes to college. You have supported me my whole life and have always told me to never stop giving up and to keep on trying. All I want to do is pick up the phone and here those two friendly voices saying they love me back. I cannot wait to give you guys a great big hug in December!

Melanie Jean Abigail Tomal and Casey Allison Teresa Kaldahl: Where do I even begin with you guys?  You guys have been my support system during my whole experience. I don't know where I would be without you guys dealing with my venting about how much I miss home and how much I want to give you big hugs. I know that no matter what, you will always have the right thing to say. You guys bring out the best in me and I cannot thank you enough for dealing with my shenanigans. I am beyond jealous that you both get to study in London (or Mel, wherever you end up!) but I know you are going to have the time of your lives just like I am. I love you both to the moon and back. "When they point to the pictures, please tell them my name."

MK, MC, Marge, Huds, Banana, and Molls: I don't think I can thank you guys enough... For real doe, we have endured a lot together over in this foreign country. I wouldn't want to do it with anyone else. You guys have seen me at my best and seen me at my worst, and you still love me. Which is very surprising because as you know, I am the worst when I am hungry and when I'm being an eejit. We have gone through a lot together and I can't imagine what my life in Ireland would be without you guys. I am so glad you are all smicks so I don't have to say goodbye. We have killed it here in Ireland this past semester and I can't wait for reunions back in South Bend and to show everyone all the loads of craic we had! I love you guys more than ever and thank you so much for making this semester one of the best!

And to everybody else, thank you for being you. Thank you for reading my blog and all the support this past semester. I have never felt so loved from so far away! So thank you!!!!

"May your stuffing be tasty
May your turkey plump.
May your potatoes and gravy
Have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious
And your pies take the prize.
And may your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off your thighs."

Have a blessed Thanksgiving filled with turkey, football, friends and family. We truly do have a lot to be thankful for!

All my love,
Libby

Look who made it to Ireland?!

The long awaited journey has finally come!
Ever since I got accepted to the NUIM program in March, my parents told me they would come out and visit me for a week. After weeks of imaging what it would like to give both of them a big hug, they arrived in Maynooth on Tuesday right when I came home from Italy. We started out just catching up in the hotel... talking about the flight, figuring out what we wanted to do for the rest of the week, catching up on everything going on back at home, etc. Then we walked around Maynooth for a little bit. I showed them my beautiful campus and where I lived. (If you ask my mom for pictures, she will most definitely show you!) I think that this was one of my favorite parts of their visit. For once, I got to be the tour guide and show them around! Also, they got to see the place that I have temporarily called my home. So when I say I was just at Dunnes getting groceries or that we went to the Roost for drinks that night, they have an image of me doing those things. I was so proud to show off my school and my luxurious apartment and I am so glad that they finally got to see what I have been doing.

Mom and I just hanging in the Glen Royal in Maynooth!

For dinner that night, we went to a Irish restaurant called O'Neills here in Maynooth. For those of you who don't know, I got my Dad a steak brander for his birthday and I have been getting so many pictures of the nice EEW branded into a nice piece of steak. There is nothing I have missed more than a piece of my Dad's steak so I ended up getting a steak sandwich and a nice glass of Guinness. Didn't taste as good as my Dad's but it tasted a little better eating it with him!

It was awesome to sit and have a Guinness with my Dad before I am 21!

By the end of dinner, my parents were exhausted and needed to get some sleep so the night ended a little early. The next morning we headed over to Glendalough and Wicklow. This was my suggestion because I have already been with the girls and Roberta. I had never been in the town of Wicklow so we decided to walk around a park for a little before heading out to Glendalough.

Our wonderful driver for the week! (Notice, she is sitting on the right, freaky!)

A park on the coast of Wicklow!

No, I did not drive the car. This was for picture purposes only.

My beautiful Momma and I in Wicklow!

First time to Ireland!

We love to take selfies!

After we hung out in Wicklow for a little bit, we headed to Glendalough. Glendalough is famously known for their early medieval monastic settlement founded in the early 7th Century by St. Kevin.
We walked around the cemetery for little bit and I gave my parents a little information that I learned in the previous time I was here. Direct quote from my dad. "For the first time, you are saving us money!" As in, I am giving them a tour and they didn't have to pay for one!

When I went with the Saint Mary's girls, I went in the middle of September so being there in the middle of November all the leaves had started to change. And somehow, in the pouring rain, Ireland looks just as beautiful.

Right near Glendalough, there is a hiking trail that is goes through the Wicklow Mountains and the National Park. Unfortunately, the weather was not what I wanted it to be but it was the exact weather you would get for weather in Ireland in November.

Dad and I at the Upper Lake in the Wicklow National Park.

After Glendalough and walking through the National Park, we asked the workers at Glendalough for a suggestion on where to eat. They told us to go a few miles up the road to a town called Hollywood. And were we thankful we went! This pub we went was called The Hollywood Inn and it was a hole in the wall restaurant with delicious dining. It was the perfect place to get the real Irish pub feel. The locals were there drinking their usual drink after a long day's work and the Irish music was softly playing in the background.
We drove back into town and just had little time to ourselves. Then we met up for drinks at my favorite place called The Roost. My parents got to meet some of the girls and we just chatted about our semester and how fun we were having. I love when my parents get to meet my friends because it's the two most important things coming together and I thought it was good for them to see who I spend all my time with and put a face to the all the "M" names!

Our weekend adventure started at the Carton House which is located here in Maynooth. My parents stayed there for the night and it was absolutely beautiful! They love watching Downton Abbey and the Carton House came straight out of the television show. We walked around while my Dad took pictures of everything. We left the Carton House in the morning and made our way to the Cliffs of Moher.
Now, the Cliffs are the most iconic part of Ireland and I was so glad I got to spend it with my parents. It was a long and stressful drive all the way to the coast of Ireland but we made it no problems! My mom was a trouper and drove slow around the twists and turns. When standing in on the coast of the Cliffs, I got a little teary-eyed. Here I am, staring out into the beautiful ocean with my two best friends in Ireland, a country where I have learned so much about myself. Words cannot do it justice and neither do the pictures. The feelings I felt in that moment were very surreal. It is an image I will never get out of my head. And to have my mom and dad there to experience it with me was everything I could ever ask for.

They were bundled like we were in Antartica!

We got lucky with the weather!

Absolutely breath taking!

After our day at the Cliffs, we headed to our first hotel for the night. We stayed in Doolin which is a town right near the Cliffs. That drive was a fun one... NOT! The road could only fit one car and I am shocked we didn't lose a side mirror! We checked into the hotel and I finally had some big girl bonding time with my mom down in the lobby drinking hot wine by the fire. Sounds like it was straight out of a movie! It was great to just talk with her and it was something I needed and had wanted for a while! (Love you, Mom!)
On our arrival, we got free drink tickets for a restaurant that was connected to the hotel so we decided to get some food from there. We were also told that there was going to be live Irish music played that night as well. My parents got this beautiful seafood platter while I got a good ole traditional burger. In Doolin, they manufacture their own beer called the Dooliner. It was a traditional Irish red ale. I wasn't a big fan but my dad said he liked it!
Once we were done with dinner, the Irish band started! It was a three person band including a guitar, an accordion, and an Irish flute. They were amazingly good and I actually knew a lot of their songs. But my personal favorite was Danny Boy. I sang it with Barrington Children's Choir for my senior song and it has been on of my favorites ever since!

We woke up the next morning and drove to Tralee to meet up with some of my grandparent's friends, Ruth and Martin. My grandparents are very blessed to have traveled to as many countries as I can think of and during their honeymoon, they met Ruth and Martin and Irish couple from Tralee. We got their information and we met up with them and went out to lunch. It was great to just sit and talk with Irish (even though I do it every day!) and get a sense of their lives compared to the lives out in Maynooth. Their hospitality was wonderful and I can see why my grandparents are such good friends.

We spent the night at the Country Shores in Castlegory. This place was your typical bed and breakfast with cute rooms and a very homey atmosphere. The people who owned the place lived in the house that we stayed in! That night, we were told there was a big Irish rugby game against the Samoans. I have not been to a Rugby match here in Maynooth but it was great to have my dad explain how to play. And not to mention the rugby boys were not too bad to look at! :) In the morning, we made the treck back to Maynooth and my parents stayed in Dublin while I, unfortunately  went to class.  Yes, I am doing a little bit of learning here! My parents took a day trip out to Gallway with a tour bus so you should ask them about it if you have the time!

We spent our last day in Ireland in Dublin. We met at the Molly Malone and started our day getting a tour of the beautiful Trinity College. This was my second time getting a tour but it's always good to get some new information. The one thing we didn't do while I went to Dublin with the Saint Mary's girls was see the Book of Kells. The Book of Kells is the illustrated bible with very ornate and detailed sketchings of the bible.

We weren't allowed to take pictures of the actual book but the library upstairs was pretty cool!

Then we headed over to the Guinness Factory! I have been wanting to go to the Guinness ever since that tall, dark, and handsome liquid touched my lips on the first night at The Roost. I have created a bond with my boyfriend here in Ireland and I love drinking it! I thought that I would hate it but it is absolutely delicious!

The start of our tour!

The Guinness factory is broken up into different floors. First we learned about the ingredients that make Guinness so special. Then we went into the tasting room to learn about how to drink Guinness correctly  and have a true taste for a good glass of malty goodness.

After the little taste and learning about how to taste the right Guinness, my dad and I learned how to pour our own glass of Guinness. We got certificates and everything so you know it's official. First, you check to see if the glass is clean without fingerprints or lipstick stains. Then you tilt the glass to a 45degree angle and lean the draft forward. You fill the glass up to the middle or above the Guinness writing on the glass. Then you have to wait for the foam and the drink to settle. You can see a white snowy "Christmas" going on in the glass. Then you push the draft away from you because it releases more nitrogen and fill the rest of the glass up. And lastly, the presentation. You must serve your Guinness logo outwards and look your guest in the eye and say "Slainte!"

Watch out, Evan! There's a new bartender in town! I bet you don't know how to pour one of these bad boys!

Officially certified!

Once we crafted our perfect pints, we headed up to the Sky Bar. This is the top of the factory where you can look out at the city of Dublin! It was beyond beautiful and it was a great place to drink a Guinness with my parents!

It was the perfect day and the sun was just setting!

After the tour, we headed towards the train station and said goodbye. Words cannot describe how much fun I had with my parents. I got to show them around and we got to be tourists together and check out the motherland of Ireland. Not going to lie, there was a moment of homesickness when I hugged that last goodbye and the next morning. It was great being with them for a few days that it became the normal and I got very upset when I woke up and they weren't in Ireland. Mom and Dad, thank you for coming out and visiting me. I hope your trip was everything you wanted and more! I love you more than ever and I am so happy you came to visit me! I LOVE YOU BOTH SO MUCH!

Sláinte!
